Can't change the desktop background in Windows 7?

If you've experienced this problem in Windows 7 as well, then you're no doubt as frustrated as I was. There's some issue in Windows 7 that makes it impossible to change your desktop background, but luckily, the fix is extremely simple.

To be able to change your desktop image, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, Click Control Panel
  2. Click Folder Options
  3. Click the View tab
  4. Ensure "Hide extensions for known file types" is UNCHECKED
  5. Click Start, paste the following text into the search box, and then press Enter
    %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\
  6. Right-click the TranscodedWallpaper.jpg file, and then click Rename.
  7. Change the file name to TranscodedWallpaper.old, and then click Yes when you are prompted.
  8. If slideshow.ini is listed, double-click this file. Slideshow.ini should open in Notepad. Select all the text in slideshow.ini if any exists, and then press Delete on the keyboard.
  9. On the File menu, click Save.
  10. Close Notepad.
  11. Close the Windows Explorer window, and then browse to the picture that will be set as the background image.
  12. Try to apply a background picture again.
 Enjoy your personalized wallpapers!
